Track Description
Achieving intended impact toward development goals using Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) depends on the design of applications, services and systems and their underlying communications infrastructure. Designing technical solutions so that they fully deliver required capabilities to their users, while operating successfully in resource constrained environments is a constant challenge. This challenge is further complicated by the social, cultural, linguistic and economic differences between designers and developers of these technologies and their intended users, beneficiaries and other stakeholders.
This track will consider the technical challenges of developing applications, services, systems and infrastructure to address the social, organisational, environmental and financial challenges that face operations in developing regions. In the broad context of supporting social and economic development objectives, areas of interest include:
- Design Methods and designs for applications, services, systems and infrastructure
- Novel designs for low cost, low energy and low maintenance applications and systems
- Technologies, infrastructure and systems that are robust and reliable in resource constrained and remote environments
- Techniques to deliver accessible e-services
- Capacity building to support local infrastructure and technical innovation
- Designs using emerging technologies (cloud, mobile, social networking, wimax, near field communications, etc.)
- Designs contributing to financially sustainable models of development
The term design as used here should be taken to represent the broad range of system lifecycle activities including requirements analysis, system architecture, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance.
